Dear friends and colleagues,
Following our successful First International Workshop held in Rome two years ago and several previous scientific meetings, it is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the Second EUNE Gastric Cancer International Workshop that will be held in Madrid (Spain) on March 25th and 26th, 2010.
Despite its decreasing incidence, gastric cancer remains a malignant disease with a high mortality rate. In the last decades it has become clear that surgical treatment for localized disease may be optimized following the lessons learnt from our Japanese colleagues. Significant progress has occurred for the first time as well in the adjuvant treatment and the treatment of advanced or metastatic disease. A proactive interaction among all disciplines involved in research, diagnosis and treatment of the disease has become apparent and of unquestionable need for success. In all these aspects, European contributions have been key, and our European Network of Excellence (EUNE) in Gastric Cancer means to promote and coordinate continued efforts in this field through its scientific activities. EUNE is committed as well to reduce the variation in the practice of gastric cancer treatment across our continent, with the conviction that standardization ensures quality. For this reason “Towards Standardization” has been chosen as the subtitle of this workshop.
